About the International Open Championship

The FIRST® LEGO® League International Open Championship (IOC) 2017 is organised by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) in partnership with the City of Bath and the University of Bath.

A vibrant celebration

The IOC is a vibrant celebration of young talent in the fields of engineering and robotics. It is also the grand finale to a season in which teams have competed and won at their regional and national FIRST® LEGO® League finals, earning the right to represent their countries on an international stage.

The event sees participation from 100 teams from all over the world, bringing together 700 children (nine to 16 years), 500 teachers, mentors and adult supporters in one place. The children will compete and showcase their skills in construction, programming, real-world problem solving and presentation of ideas and solutions while also sharing their culture, core values, making friends and having fun!

Hosted in the UK for the first time in history!

Hosting an International Open Championship has been an ambition of the IET for many years and we are delighted to welcome you to the beautiful Roman City of Bath. It is a world heritage site with amazing tourist attractions to keep all our visitors entertained. The event programme is jam packed with exciting activities, the opportunity to share your cultures with the local community and above all, to participate in an excellent, well-organised competition supported by our enthusiastic volunteers.

Our venue, the University of Bath, is a world-class university with wonderful facilities and on-site accommodation. They are celebrating their 50th Birthday and feel the creative spirit and core values of FIRST® LEGO® League match well with their identity. The University are enthusiastic about welcoming guests from around the world to mix with the local community and enjoy their venues, which they have graciously donated free-of-charge.

FIRST® LEGO®  League enjoys a rich and successful history in Bath, with many local teams having travelled abroad to compete in previous Open Championships. 'Untitled 1', the 2013 FIRST® LEGO® League World Festival Champions come from the city and many local schools participate in one of the largest regional finals in Europe just a few miles away in Bristol.

Inspiring the next generation

In the UK and Ireland we are very aware of the need to inspire the next generation of engineers and STEM professionals. We believe there can be no better way of achieving this goal than by supporting the FIRST® LEGO® League programme. The rapid development of useful life skills such as creative thinking, problem solving and teamwork is fantastic. FIRST® LEGO® League participants learn how to find innovative solutions to real world and technical problems whilst working in a team. This is perfect preparation for a career in the STEM sector.

DREAM BIG: Engineering our World – UK Premier
