Factory of the Future - New ways of manufacturing

The IET Viscount Nuffield / Mensforth Lecture 2017

15 March 2017 | Coventry University, UK

About the lecture

Robotic manufacturing (photo) Today’s modern manufacturing is highly efficient, organised and structured.

Tom Williams, COO of Airbus Commercial Aircraft, will talk about how the new robotised flow line in Broughton is one part of a digital manufacturing execution system, but this is just the start.

Comparing to the car industry, their challenge remains the size, scale and customisation of their products which requires much complexity in the tools and equipment.

This challenge calls for getting away from the current heavy automation systems and implementing more lightweight, flexible and collaborative robots.

At the same time, increased demand in performance and production rates require a radical new approach to the design of aircraft wings.

In Filton, Airbus teams are working to create the wing of the future.
