About the EngTalk
With over 300 people in attendance the IET EngTalks on Future Energy - SMRs: Nuclear Fad or Nuclear Future? was a huge success. A new nuclear paradigm, Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), are a type of nuclear fission reactor which are smaller than conventional ones, manufactured at a plant and then brought to the site to be fully constructed.
Introducing the evening’s discussions, Dame Sue Ion gave her own 15 minute insight on the main subject of this EngTalk. Entitled ‘BREXATOM: Should we be afraid?’ Dame Sue Ion talked about the global challenges in the nuclear sector, new build and BREXATOM and what is next for the UK’s domestic industry.
The main talk was given by John Molyneux of Rolls Royce, a leading figure in SMR development who believes in their huge potential to strengthen the UK's energy security. He gave details of how Rolls-Royce is teaming up with a host of British engineering giants to make SMRs a reality in the UK. He also summarised the different novel designs and technologies of SMRs options from around the world.
The talks ended with an engaging Q&A session with both speakers. This was followed by a networking drinks reception and technology showcase.
