40 years and more: The development of optical fibre systems and devices for communications and sensing.
This webinar will outline the development of optical fibre devices and systems for communications and for sensing applications and emerging future directions. The first demonstration of optical fibre for communications took place in 1978 and continuous development has meant that optical fibre now provides terabit per second capacity over global distances. Optical fibre has also proven itself to be very useful as the basis for a range of sensors, which are now deployed in a wide variety of areas such as bio and chemical sensing, temperature sensing, structural health monitoring and electrical current sensing.
