Synopsis: The first successful transmission from the western terminal of the transatlantic telegraph cable was from Heart's Content to Valentia on 27th July 1866. Prior to this messages would have taken a minimum of 2 weeks to cross the Atlantic by ship, depending on weather. The transatlantic transmission heralded a new era in international communication across the Atlantic and opened up the world to real time commerce. This event celebrates the connection from Europe to North America, old connecting to new, and the first telegraph message across this new cable. Telecommunications developments since that first event 155 years ago will also be discussed.

Speakers: Mayor F Cumby, D Cassidy, S Walsh, T Bishop
