Decarbonization of Power Generation – Technical Visit to CLPP Black Point Power Station

About CLP Power Black Point Power Station:

Commissioned since 1996, originally designed to house 8 x units of Combined Cycle Gas Turbine (CCGT) with total of 2,500MW generating capacity.

In response to the Government’s plan to increase the proportion of local gas-fired generation to around 50% of the total fuel mix in 2020 and to ensure a reliable power supply, the new gas-fired generation unit with an advanced design at Black Point Power Station in Tuen Mun has been put into operation in mid-2020. The new unit features a 550MW CCGT configuration which gives it an efficiency of around 60%, making it one of the most efficient gas-fired power plants in the world.

To continuously drive for improvement in efficiency and emission performance as well as meeting increase electricity demand, turbine upgrade work of the 8 CCGTs completed in 2022, increase the capacity of each unit by 25MW.

To allow for the gradual phasing out of the coal-fired generation units at Castle Peak Power Station’s ‘A’ Station, the construction of another gas-fired generation unit in Black Point Power Station has been carried out and is scheduled for full operation soon.
