Electrification in Motorsports Seminar

In recent years, regulation change and engineering progress in motorsport has led to a rapid acceleration in the adoption of electrification in all areas of powertrains and systems.

These developments have resulted in unprecedented improvements in the efficiencies achieved from hybrid and pure electric powertrains, including the recent achievement of Formula One powertrains exceeding 50% efficiency as well as rapid improvements in the efficiency of the pure electric drivetrains being produced for the FIA Formula E championship.

Featuring leading experts from a range of world-class organisations at the forefront of these advances, this one-day interactive seminar and showcase will provide a unique insight into the technologies and systems being developed and applied across a wide range of motorsport applications.

It will also explore how these advances are helping to drive research, development and system efficiencies in other parallel technology-focused sectors.

Building on two previous and highly successful events, the 2020 edition will see a wider scope and fresh input, from those continuing to push the boundaries to those emerging in this key growth area.

Steve Blevins

Steve Blevins

Project Manager - Performance Products - Ricardo

Steve holds an engineering degree from Cranfield Institute of Technology and has spent the last 28 years working driveline development.

Since 1996, he has been project managing motorsport driveline projects for Ricardo in a number of diverse areas; from MotoGP to LMP and R5 rally to single-seater circuit racing.

Having successfully delivered both ‘factory racing’ and ‘customer racing’ projects he has enjoyed working with the likes of Audi Sport, Hyundai Motorsport, Renault Sport, Porsche Motorsport, PSA Motorsport and Dallara Automobili.

Lewis Butler

Lewis Butler

Technical Director of the Mahindra Formula E team

One of the earlier graduates to have taken on the Formula Student (and Formula SAE) challenge, as part of the strong Leeds University team.

Started career with Arrows F1 team in 1999 as a structures engineer on the back of that project.

Maintained progression from this initial work, becoming a structural specialist for some years, through to a senior position within Red Bull Racing.

Became Head of structures group at Force India, and then progressed to Chief Designer at Lotus F1 (later to become the defunct Caterham F1 Team).

After the failure of that team in 2014 became a consultant for some time; working on various projects including F1 and other motorsports, as well as latterly Formula E with Mahindra.

This expanded quickly to become a full time role (matching the expansion of the championship itself) for the past 3 years - as Technical Director of the Mahindra Formula E team, therefore responsible for the program and the cars fielded by Mahindra in the championship.

Dr Miquel Gimeno-Fabra

Dr Miquel Gimeno-Fabra

Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering University & Chief Engineer - Watkinson Motors Ltd

Miquel is a record-breaking academic with an impressive history in building champion race machines. He first studied Chemistry but quickly moved to materials, completing a PhD in nanomaterials applied to composites. His passion for mechanical engineering and motorsports resulted in him eventually becoming an Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Electrical Engineering at the University of Nottingham, which he currently does on a part-time basis. He also works as Chief Engineer at Watkinson Motors, designing and building an electric hypercar.

Miquel has managed both petrol and electric race teams. He is best known for his work in the University of Nottingham’s electric superbike and leading its team to become one of the most successful electric race teams in the World.
