Online Webinar : Electrification for the future

Electrification for the future – the ‘green’ engineering challenges for Britain’s Railways

  • Railway electrification projects in the UK have encountered a stop/start approach over the last few decades. With a 2050 climate target requiring carbon emissions to be reduced to net zero, Network Rail have encouraged a “rolling programme of electrification” to secure this ambition.

  • In this talk, learn about some of the challenges faced by overhead line engineers and the importance of co-ordinated design when planning for future electrification. Finally, discover how HS2 Ltd is incorporating global best practice techniques to deliver a decarbonised energy transmission system for Britain’s brand new high speed railway.

  • Chris Bryan is a Chartered Mechanical Engineer working as Senior OCS Engineer for HS2 Ltd. He is able to draw on previous experience of simulating and testing brand new electrification systems installed on the Great Eastern and Great Western railways. He currently serves as a UK expert for the development of international electrification standards with BSi and IEC.

Chris will be joined by Pascal Grosjean, the Head of OCS at HS2 Ltd, to discuss matters relating to railway electrification. Pascal is a recognised global expert in high speed electrification projects with direct experience of the delivery of HS1 - UK’s first high speed railway.

Attendees should note that Chris and Pascal will not be able to discuss specific details of procurement relating to OCS or other HS2 Ltd disciplines.

Reasons to attend

In this talk, learn about some of the challenges faced by overhead line engineers and how a rebranding exercise could help to repair the reputational damage incurred from some more recent projects. Finally, discover how HS2 may positively or negatively impact the chances of achieving a carbon free energy transmission system as it enters its early stages of construction from London to Birmingham.
