IET 150th Anniversary Celebration Event

To mark this celebratory milestone, the Yorkshire, and Humberside Regional Network (YHRN) will offer four individual presentations covering an interesting mix of latest technologies balanced with some historical information from formative industries and engineering the region capably offers.

The event will showcase how new and emerging technologies are driving innovation in a variety of real-life applications such as Satellite Imaging, Biometrics and Digital Health, in collaboration with industrial and healthcare partners.

The presentations will demonstrate within the region, the willingness to provide confidence to the UK governments ambitions, encompassing how industrial emissions will change over time and provide the regions projects and industry with a well-defined, optimal route to achieving true net-zero in 2040.

Richard Gibbon OBE CEng FIMechE

Professional Mechanical Engineer

I have been a passionate Mechanical Engineer from being a child and once qualified as a Professional Mechanical Engineer; I held many exciting posts but ended up with the best engineering job in the World ...Chief Engineer of the National Railway Museum (NRM).

Now long retired, I still amuse myself and others with engineering projects as the presentation will show.

Alan Chater CEng FIET

Alan Chater CEng FIET

Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology

Alan is a Chartered Engineer and Fellow of the Institution of Engineering & Technology.

He studied during the  1960s / 70’s at Sheffield Polytechnic & the Rotherham College of Technology and was awarded an IEE accredited HNC in Electrical Principals, Power & Rotating Machine Systems with further endorsements in Industrial Electronics & Control Systems.

Having served a JIB registered apprenticeship, followed by several years in the electrical contracting industry, he then joined British Steel Corporation as an electrical draughtsman and through experience and career development, was promoted to an Electrical Design Engineer working on extensive projects across the Special Steels Division. In 1981 he joined the International Head Office, of PZ Cussons PLC, a ‘Fast Moving Consumer Goods’ business, based in Greater Manchester. Initially joining as an electrical projects engineer, he was subsequently offered the Executive Head of Electrical Engineering role a short time after joining the business. Gaining a Senior Executive role in the business, he finally became the Group Engineering Manager of the Electrical Power, Control Systems and Mechanical Services team, working on major engineering projects for the business in the UK, Europe, East & West Africa, the Far East & Australia, until retirement.

He has been a combined Member then Fellow of the former IIE now IET for over 39 years and a Member, Vice Chair, Chair and now Immediate Past Chair of the South Yorkshire Local Network over the past 10 years and a member of the YHRN committee.

He is a co-founder of the successful local Joint PEI committee and is the regional IET representative on the Joint PEI/STEM committee, while supporting other STEM related forums across, the Sheffield City Region.

He has been nominated on two occasions for the IET’s global ‘Volunteer Core Values Awards’ and won the ‘Integrity’ category in 2018.

Geraint Evans

Chartered Engineer

Geraint is a Chartered Engineer with over 30 years’ experience in the energy industries, gained in the coal, oil, heavy chemicals, renewables and research fields. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Chemical Engineering, a Member of the Energy Institute and a Member of the SCI. Geraint holds the APM Project Management Qualification.

Geraint provides specialist technology and project delivery assurance expertise, focussed around emerging sustainable energy technologies and systems. Originally educated and trained as a Fuels and Energy Technologist, his work has always been centred at the interface between energy production and utilisation - his interests therefore range from the upstream through to utilisation downstream. Key technical specialisms include biomass, bioenergy, biofuels, BECCS, emerging conversion technologies including gasification and electro-fuels, carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) and whole energy systems strategies.

Innovations in Applied AI – Space, Biometrics and Healthcare

This talk will briefly present our ongoing research and developments in satellite imaging, Biometrics and Digital Health in collaboration with industrial and healthcare partners. The talk will also focus on the extraction of meaningful information and knowledge representation, which makes it possible to develop different useful applications for prediction, security and diagnostics.

"The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan (HCIP):

Will provide confidence to the UK governments ambitions, encompassing how industrial emissions will change over time and provide the regions projects and industry with a well-defined, optimal route to achieving true net-zero in 2040. The Humber region emits more CO2 than any other UK industrial cluster – 50% more than the next largest – thus providing HCIP with a significant opportunity.

HCIP will harness the collaborative power of the region’s industry to showcase the way forward to net zero by 2040.

The Humber Industrial Cluster Plan was set up in January 2021 following the start of the 2-phase decarbonisation of industrial clusters roadmaps competition in 2019 by UKRI. The project team includes Membership organisation CATCH, the HEY LEP plus 8 industry partners. Partners will work together to develop the Humber Industrial Cluster Plan that will set out the strategic roadmap for the Humber Cluster to follow to achieve net zero by 2040.

This presentation outlines the scope of the projects and types of technologies being used to achieve a net zero Humber Cluster by 2040.

Historical overview of Liberty Speciality Steels, Stocksbridge Works

A short overview about steelmaking history in South Yorkshire, the presentation focusses around Liberty Speciality Steels. In light of IET’s 150-year celebrations, the presentation creates a background as to how this formative industry evolved before the formation of our Institution to the present day.

Steel has been at the centre of South Yorkshire’s history for around 175 years, its rise to national prominence and its sometimes-difficult journey to where, it sees itself in today’s business world.

Steelmaking has used technology over this time span, to enhance production methods and process rates of manufacture, leading the way in many instances with the introduction of power and automation development in an end user environment.
