RMS - Photovoltaics and Solar Cells
About
This talk by John Baylis covers the practical application of photovoltaics, the conversion of light into electricity using semiconducting materials that exhibit the photovoltaic effect, a phenomenon studied in physics, photochemistry, and electrochemistry utilising the sun and its power in solar panels.
We will learn how they work and how and where they are made.
Following a brief history of the development of PV power and a look at several applications, from satellites to ships, the talk concludes with data on the growth of PV in the UK and worldwide and its role in the drive to a sustainable future.
