Protecting Lightly Used Railway Level Crossings

The presentation will debate the opportunities and threats associated with level crossings from an operational, technical and business point of view, looking into challenges and how the supply chain has and can continue to rise to the challenge.

We will summarise the makeup of the level crossing estate on Network Rail infrastructure and explain how the risks present at the crossings are understood and managed. It will show how the UK compares with other European countries on level crossing safety and describe the efforts which are made to close crossings wherever possible. It will then look particularly at level crossings used by low numbers of people and vehicles but which can’t be closed.

We will look at the variety of processes and technologies in use or under development to meet the challenges of these sites, which are often in remote locations. A significant challenge is to keep the cost of the protection system proportionate with the low level of operational risk to crossing users and trains these crossings have, but which have the potential for a high consequence accident.
