This presentation will be given by Dr. James Mason BSc(Hons) MBA MPhil PhD CEng FIET SMIEEE.
It will describe the historical development of battery powered electric vehicles for road transportation. It will provide a technical overview of the development of battery technology and power train systems together with charging technologies and implications for the electrical energy supply industry.

Dr. James Mason
Battery Engineering Manager - Ilika plc
Dr James Mason has degrees in electrical and electronic engineering from the University of Birmingham and electrochemistry from the University of Southampton. He started his career as a development engineer at Lucas Electrical Ltd working on automotive electronics, electric vehicles and semiconductor products.
He was then a R&D engineer at the Hursley laboratory of IBM UK with responsibility for the development of computer display, disk drive, fibre optic and data communication integrated circuits and products. At IBM, he was also a master inventor. He subsequently had senior engineering roles at Inphi UK Ltd and Semtech EMEA Ltd designing integrated circuits for high speed optical communications and silicon photonics.
Currently, he is battery engineering manager at Ilika PLC involved in the development of large format solid state batteries. Dr Mason is a chartered electrical engineer, fellow of the IET and senior member of the IEEE.
Reasons to attend
This event was originally intended for on-campus delivery at one of the Solent area's 3 universities. Given ongoing Covid19-related restrictions, it is now in webinar form and open to all.
We hope that students and practising engineers & technicians in early career stages will gain in particular from this event.
