Toby Norris Memorial Lecture - Electricity networks and EV charging infrastructure to achieve Net Zero

Organised by the IET Midlands Power Group

As a network operator distributing and transmitting electricity across the North of Scotland and South of England, Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) are responsible for delivering power to over 3.8m homes and businesses. With the UK’s commitment of achieving net zero reductions by 2050, SSEN have a key role in decarbonising transport, ensuring carefully planned infrastructure is in place when and where it is needed. This session will cover how they are combining granular projections of electric vehicle (EV) uptake with network asset data to create a tool which will allow them to ensure their electricity networks can support the necessary EV charging infrastructure so that the country can meet the net zero commitments at the pace required.

Richard Hartshorn

Future Networks team - Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks

As part of the Future Networks team within Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks for the past eight years, Richard has been involved in the inception, delivery and dissemination of findings from a range of innovation projects. This has primarily involved reviewing the impacts of electric vehicle (EV) charging to electricity distribution networks, the ability to manage charging to mitigate risks, and the necessary changes to internal and external policies and processes to support customers transitioning to decarbonised transport. As EV Readiness Manager, Richard is assessing both the risks and opportunities presented by EVs, developing Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks’ EV Strategy to both mitigate and seize upon them.

Maciej Fila
