Visit to the National Museum of Computing and Presentation of Babbage Computer

Charles Babbage is hailed for his 19th century calculating machines – and this November we unveil an exhibition celebrating his work.

We’ll host a working representation of Difference Engine No. 2 which was completed at the Science Museum in 2002 and built according to the specifications and designs of Babbage.

This version of the Science Museum’s five-tonne original is the result of a research project by the Royal Holloway Computer Science Department of the University of London to build a simplified version of Babbage’s machine using modern techniques and materials that included 3D-printed nylon and laser-cut steel. And, of course, it’s powered by a steam engine!

Join us on 26 November to witness this steam-powered wonder in action and enjoy a presentation by Doron Swade, who led the Science Museum’s project, on the works and wonders of Babbage, his engines – and to discover more about something that gets overlooked in the great and colourful Babbage story: the language of signs and symbols invented by Babbage to describe his machines’ workings and help optimise their designs.

We’re honoured to have Professor Adrian Johnson of Royal Holloway, University of London, who will operate the machine and take your questions.

Tours are limited to 24 people in groups of 12.

Travel: 55 miles from Coventry, about 1 hour 15 minutes. Please allow time to park and walk to the museum reception.
