Internet of Things in Healthcare: Applications, Opportunities and Challenges

The healthcare industry is getting costlier than ever. Population aging is a global challenge and the number of chronic diseases is on the rise.

While technology such as IoT cannot prevent the population from ageing or eradicate chronic diseases in the near future, it can at least mitigate the situation and improve the quality of life.

With IoT technology, real-time monitoring of patients can be made possible by using implantable or wearable devices. Vital medical information such as heartbeat, glucose level and aspiration can be monitored by connecting these smart medical devices to a local router or a smartphone app. The collected data can be transferred to a medical centre. The vast amount of data collected can be further analysed. It would allow healthcare organizations to get vital healthcare analytics and data-driven insights for better decision-making.

At the same time, the IoT technology is also facing great challenges for healthcare applications, such as data security & privacy, integration of different devices and standards, and the accuracy of remote data collection.

This seminar aims to address these issues by discussing the applications, opportunities and challenges of Internet of Things in healthcare.

Reasons to attend

  • This event will bridge the two trendy topics of IoT and healthcare. Currently there is no UK workshop or seminar specifically focusing on the applications of IoT on healthcare. The event will be jointly run by the IoT TPN and sister IET TPNs.
  • The Science and Technology Facilities Council, the Sensor City and Alder Hey Hospital have nationally and internationally renowned facilities and expertise. This event will bring together experts from these institutes to demonstrate what they have to offer on IoT technology for healthcare applications.
  • This event should be of the interests of audience from the IoT society, people working in the NHS, manufacturer and cybersecurity scientists and engineers. The event will also be a suitable platform for networking and information sharing for scientists, engineer, medical professionals and PhD students.
  • Given that both IoT and healthcare are very relevant to people’s everyday life, the TPN(s) will work with Local Networks to attract the general public to attend the event.
