Visit to Greater Manchester Solar Farm and Thermal Recovery Facilities
The Manchester Retired Members Group of the IET has organised a double site visit event to the Greater Manchester Combined Authority's (GMCA) Recycle for Greater Manchester’s Solar Farm and Thermal Recovery Facility ( TRF ), or their Household Waste Recovery Centre if the TRF is off-line for maintenance.
Greater Manchester has launched in March 2019 a 5-Year Environmental plan, which set out their long-term environmental vision – to be carbon neutral by 2038. Solar farm and waste recovery are just two of many facilities and actions to achieve the plan.
At full capacity, the solar farm is set to produce around 2 million kWh of electricity every year, which is enough to power approximately 600 homes. It comprises over 8,000 individual solar panels across 6.8 acres (296,208 square feet). Carbon savings is estimated to be over 1,100 tonnes per annum, contributing to the 48% carbon reduction target for Greater Manchester.
The Thermal Recovery Facility (TRF) in Bolton generates enough power to operate the facility, plus approximately 7MW of electricity, which is then transferred to the National Grid. Thermal Recovery is a process by which the energy produced from burning waste is used to create electricity. The waste is burned at high temperatures turning the carbon and hydrogen present in the original waste into carbon dioxide and water respectively.
GMCA has a network of 20 Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC) for Greater Manchester residents to recycle and dispose of their household waste safely. GMCA works with local councils to inspire and encourage the residents of Greater Manchester to manage their waste responsibly, helping residents to see the value of waste and the real benefits that can be achieved by wasting less and recycling right.
Further details concerning location and Health & Safety etc. information will be sent to registrants.
