18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the IET Malaysia Local Network
About
The IET Malaysia Local Network's 18th Annual General Meeting (AGM) is a significant event that brings together professionals, academics, and students within the engineering and technology community. This is a fantastic opportunity to network, learn about our achievements over the past year, and discuss the future direction of our Local Network.
Pre-AGM Technical Talk:
Session 1
Speaker 1: M Shahriman M Sharif, CEng MIET, MSc
Supporting Speaker: M Akmal Yahaya, CEng MIET, MSc, CMRP, LSSGB
Topic title: Reliability Backed Methodology: Value Estimator Initiative
Synopsis: To stay profitable, petrochemical plant needs to continuously reduce its operation costs and at the same time increase its reliability. Effective maintenance activity is one of key drivers for improving plant bottom line. Effective maintenance activities will increase equipment reliability and plant availability leading to total reduction in maintenance costs, a major portion of plant operational costs. This study serves as an initial investigation on creation of an Algorithm model which is backed by reliability methodologies utilizing GE APM real time data to quantify values from the actions (taken or defer) in APM Health & Reliability Module. This project focusses on 2 value creation models, namely M-Plan deferment and equipment anomaly/alert intervention. In M-plan deferment model, maintaining equipment based on optimized interval would allow reduction in cost (manhour, consumable) while maintaining the reliability target for each equipment. For anomaly intervention model, timely intervention of anomalies & findings from Preventive Maintenance program, would reduce the overall risk of equipment failing resulting in loss of total function delivered. Algorithm models-based reliability methodologies utilizing GE APM real time data to quantify values from actions (action taken or deferment related to maintenance activities) in APM Health & Reliability Module has been created and translated into live dashboard. The developed VEiN algortihm can be used as decision making tool to prioritize maintenance works based on conditional state and risks. VEiN dashboard can highlight value creation and loss based on maintenance action undertaken, to drive more cost-effective maintenance activities. This is a novel methodology that has yet to be developed and implemented in any industry.
Session 2
Speaker 2: Ir Surendran Kandasamy, PEng, CEng (Head (Hydrogen), Energy Transition Solutions)
Topic title: Engineering Evolution: Hydrogen's Role in Shaping Future Capabilities
Synopsis: In this presentation, we will explore the transformative potential of hydrogen in engineering and its pivotal role in shaping future capabilities. As the world transitions to a low-carbon economy, hydrogen stands out as a key player in sustainable and clean energy solutions. We will delve into the basics of hydrogen production, focusing on green hydrogen, which is produced using renewable energy sources, and its advantages over traditional fossil fuels. A significant emphasis will be placed on the new engineering talent requirements essential for advancing the hydrogen economy. We will highlight the need for engineers skilled in hydrogen technologies, including fuel cell design, hydrogen storage solutions, and renewable energy integration. The presentation will showcase real-world applications and ongoing projects that demonstrate hydrogen's versatility and efficiency, underscoring the demand for innovative engineering approaches. Furthermore, we will discuss the challenges and opportunities associated with hydrogen adoption, such as infrastructure development, cost reduction, and technology advancement. By understanding these factors, we can better appreciate the strategic importance of cultivating a new generation of engineers equipped to tackle these challenges and drive progress. The presentation will uncover how hydrogen is not only a fuel of the future but also a catalyst for engineering evolution. This presentation aims to inspire and inform stakeholders about the critical role of hydrogen in shaping a sustainable and innovative future, and the essential engineering talent required to realize this vision.
