Application of HVDC-VSC for regional power grid
hosted by IET Singapore Network Power and Energy Section
About
Energy transition initiatives to decarbonise generation of electricity to renewable sources are happening in a large scale globally. These initiatives have also driven the growth in resource sharing among the countries of the world. And the transmission of renewable energy over long distances and across borders in the form of a Regional Power Grid is now a common topic among power system operators and grid companies. One of the key topics when deciding on a Regional Power Grid is the use of HVAC vs HVDC. While HVAC transmission is well understood by most grid companies in this region; the use of HVDC is relatively new especially with the VSC-based technology.
This technical talk will focus on discussing HVDC and its role in long distance power transmission. The talk will then introduce the consideration factors when deciding between HVDC and HVAC, and finally it will touch on the overview of a HVDC system design. In general, the participants of this technical talk will gain an introduction to the concept of a HVDC system and its application.
