Application of Lean in Hazardous or Clean Environments
About
We are excited to announce an upcoming online seminar focused on the future of Lean methodologies in manufacturing and other high-risk sectors. Lean has long been a cornerstone of operational efficiency, continuous improvement and waste reduction. This seminar will have two presenters who will show case studies of how they have implemented Lean in these environments.
Agenda
1. Welcome and Introductions Ketan Varia (Chair)
2. Speaker 1: Magdalena Wywijas, ET Enterprises Ltd
3. Speaker 2: Ivan Sapojinets, Isotopia Molecular Imaging Ltd
4. Interactive Session : Participants will engage in virtual breakout rooms to discuss key themes from the presentations and share their own perspectives and insights.
5. Plenary Session: A live Q&A session with both speakers.

Programme
Speaker 1: Magdalena Wywijas, ET Enterprises Ltd
Presentation Title: [Making Photons Count with Lean Manufacturing] – 20 minutes
The talk will demonstrate how applying lean principles can accelerate the automation of photomultiplier manufacturing. It will begin with an introduction to photomultiplier construction and provide an overview of the physical vapour deposition process used for photocathodes. Magdalena will discuss in‑house hardware and software developed to enable process automation, outlining both the advantages and the challenges encountered. She will share the results to show how adopting lean methodologies has driven process improvements, reduced product costs, and enabled faster scale up to high volume manufacturing, while minimising losses in large scale production.
Speaker 2: Ivan Sapojinets, Isotopia, Molecular Imaging Ltd
Presentation Title: [Lean Thinking: Lessons from Radiopharmaceuticals] – 20 mins
The talk will explore how hazardous manufacturing environments require tailored Lean approaches, and how these principles extend beyond radiopharmaceuticals to other high-risk settings. It will examine the core challenges posed by hazards such as radiation, heat, noise, and electromagnetic exposure, and present practical examples of Lean adaptations that enhance both safety and efficiency. Ivan will share a case study from radiopharmaceutical production to illustrate these methods in action. The session will conclude by considering how best to balance risk, cost, and time, supported by visual decision-making tools.
The event will be chaired by Ketan Varia, Committee Member of the IET – Manufacturing Technical Network. Ketan has a background in Lean and Change Management and has worked on large scale Manufacturing change projects for Motorola, Corus Steel and Fluorocarbon.
