About

Antennas intended for present-day and future applications must meet stringent design specifications for operational bandwidth, gain, radiation pattern, efficiency, and other parameters. Conventional antenna design guidelines are often insufficient for the practical design of contemporary antennas in terms of design quality and efficiency. Therefore, antenna designers need to adopt novel methodologies to efficiently explore modern antenna designs. This presentation introduces a modern antenna design exploration methodology based on machine learning and heuristic optimization that enables efficient, high-quality antenna design solutions.

The following topics will be included in the presentation:

(1) the role of AI in antenna design;

(2) AI-driven antenna design exploration methods and case studies;

(3) a brief demonstration of a to-be-ready AI-driven antenna design software tool.

Antennas and Propagation
Radio-frequency (RF) and Microwave
Electromagnetics

Speakers

Bo Liu

Professor of Electronic Design Automation - University of Glasgow

Bo Liu received the B.Eng. degree from Tsinghua University, China, in 2008 and the Ph.D. degree from University of Leuven (KU Leuven), Belgium, in 2012. Currently, he is a Professor of Electronic Design Automation at University of Glasgow. He is a Fellow of IET and a Senior Member of IEEE. His research focuses on novel data-driven optimization and machine learning algorithms for electronic design and their real-world applications, including antennas, analog/RF ICs, and filters.

In AI-driven antenna design, he invented the SADEA series. The SADEA series is the first to address the bottleneck of computationally expensive electromagnetic simulations and the lack of initial designs in antenna design exploration, making the AI-driven antenna design approach suitable for industrial requirements.
