Building Resilient Power Infrastructure: Digital Twins, HIL & Next-Gen Microgrids hosted by IET Singapore Local Network

About

Presentation 1: Real-time simulation, Digital Twin, and Hardware-in-the-Loop applications in Data Centres

Synopsis:
As AI and cloud computing drive the rapid expansion of data centers, ensuring reliable, resilient, and energy-efficient power infrastructure has become increasingly critical. This presentation demonstrates how OPAL-RT's real-time simulation, Digital Twin, and Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) technologies enable engineers and operators to validate and optimize data center systems before deployment.

The session will explore applications across five key domains: Grid Interconnection & Protection, Backup Power & Microgrids, Energy Management Systems (EMS/DCIM/EPMS), Cooling & HVAC Systems, and Power Conversion & UPS Architectures.

Through practical industry use cases, attendees will gain insight into how simulation can reduce project risk, accelerate commissioning, and support the development of resilient, future-ready data center infrastructure.

Presentation 2: Next-Gen Microgrids: Smart Control, EMS, and Real-Time HIL Validation

Synopsis:
The rapid integration of renewable generation, distributed energy resources (DERs), battery energy storage systems (BESS), and power electronic converters is transforming conventional electrical networks into intelligent, resilient microgrids. As modern systems accommodate rising levels of inverter-based resources and electrified loads, advanced control architectures, Energy Management Systems (EMS), digital twins, and standards-compliant operation have become vital for ensuring system stability, operational efficiency, and grid interoperability.

This session provides a high-level overview of next-generation microgrids, exploring AC/DC architectures, hierarchical control, and intelligent EMS optimization alongside digital twin modeling. It highlights practical methodologies for de-risking physical controllers through real-time Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL) validation and ensuring seamless IEEE 1547 grid interconnection compliance, equipping attendees with essential insights to deploy resilient, high-availability power systems across mission-critical infrastructure.

Speakers

Benoit Marcoux

Business Development Manager – Asia OPAL-RT Technologies

Mr. Marcoux obtained his bachelor degree in engineering in 1994 from the Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal specializing in power systems. His past experiences include 14 years in Hydro-Quebec doing various R&D work related to the power system simulation department. This also involved testing and validation of many types of devices that eventually would be implemented on the real grid as well as many related HIL studies.  His knowledge of real-time power system simulation has been on-gong for the past 30 years and Benoit now works for OPAL-RT Technologies as the person responsible for the Asia Pacific region.

Dr. Veerapandiyan (Veera) Veerasamy

Lecturer in Cybersecurity at Curtin University Singapore

Dr. Veerapandiyan (Veera) Veerasamy is a Lecturer in Cybersecurity at Curtin University Singapore and a former Research Fellow at NTU's Energy Research Institute. His expertise spans smart grids, microgrids, battery energy storage systems, cyber-physical security, and real-time HIL simulation. He actively contributes to industry standards and testing frameworks for next-generation energy systems, renewable integration, and grid resilience.
