This presentation will explore the vital role of cyber security in critical national infrastructure, highlighting how cyber-attacks can translate into real-world physical consequences. Rowan will also discuss practical techniques and methodologies used in the nuclear sector to manage cyber risk and develop effective security strategies. She will also provide some basic information about early careers pathways for cyber security professionals.
Talk explores the evolving cyber threat landscape and its impact on Nuclear and Critical National Infrastructure, where resilience is vital to national security and public safety. Drawing on personal experience and professional journey within the sector, it reflects on real-world challenges in securing complex OT and IT environments.

John Elder

Cyber Security Director - Amentum

A Senior Security Professional, with a MSc (Dist.) in Ethical Hacking & Computer Security and 11 years’ experience in addressing cyber security challenges across Critical National Infrastructure sectors, John is the Cyber Security Director for Amentum’s Intelligence and Cyber division.
A Chartered Engineer (CEng MIET), with a BEng (Hons) in Electrical & Energy Engineering and over 16 years’ international engineering experience in the Oil & Gas and Utilities sectors, John is proficient with operational technologies (OT) and the application of security to such environments.

Rowan Edlington,

I&C Cyber Security Engineer - EDF Nuclear Services

Rowan is a cyber security professional working in the nuclear industry. Her work is primarily focused on securing industrial control systems (ICS) within nuclear new build projects, ensuring that critical operational systems are resilient against an evolving cyber threat landscape. Rowan supports ICS across the full plant lifecycle, from early design through to operational phases. This includes reviewing system architecture and design to identify potential security vulnerabilities, as well as implementing pragmatic, risk-based security controls aligned with international standards and industry best practices.
