Electronic Spectrum Operations - The High-Low mix

Understanding Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations in Modern Warfare

About

This lecture will examine the strategic integration of Electromagnetic Spectrum Operations (EMSO) within the high-low mix paradigm—a deliberate fusion of advanced, high-end systems with scalable, lower-cost technologies to enhance operational flexibility and resilience. In an era of increasingly contested and congested battlespace, this approach is vital across the spectrum of warfare, from tactical force protection to strategic Counter Anti-Access/Area Denial operations.

Playing a critical role in supporting Integrated Air and Missile Defence for homeland security and ensuring layered defence against evolving threats, access to EMSO capabilities—enabled by platforms such as CRFS RFeye—empowers both the military and industry to deliver persistent, agile, and cost-effective spectrum dominance. By addressing the challenges and opportunities of blending exquisite and mass-produced technologies, the brief aims to provoke thought on how EMSO can be leveraged across Land, Maritime, Air, and Space domains to maintain operational advantage in both peer and asymmetric conflict environments.
