Flags to Fibre on the GWR: 200 Years of Railway Signalling

Hosted by IET Bristol and the IRSE

About

In celebration of the 200th anniversary of the railways, this talk offers a personal and locally grounded journey through two centuries of signalling and telecommunications (S&T) development. From the early days of hand signals and time intervals to the advent of telegraphy, interlocking, track circuits, and modern digital systems, the presentation highlights key technological milestones and their impact on railway safety and efficiency.

With a distinct Great Western Railway (GWR) bias, it reflects on the region’s pioneering role in signalling innovation, drawing on historical anecdotes, engineering breakthroughs, and lived experience within the industry. Delivered with fun and insight, the talk invites reflection, discussion, and appreciation for the legacy and future of railway signalling.

Ben Morris

Signalling Review and Risk Engineer

I'm a UK Mainline Signalling Engineer with 18 years’ experience in keeping trains moving safely and efficiently. My work spans all eras of UK signalling.
Blending historical insight with modern engineering to deliver effective, people-focused solutions. I thrive on solving complex infrastructure challenges by drawing on a deep knowledge of signalling principles, scheme layout design, risk assessments, level crossings, and wiring design. I'm passionate about old electronics, learning from the past, and making systems work better for everyone.
Collaboration is at the heart of what I do. I value the relationships I've built with colleagues who share my dedication to growing a railway that serves both people and places. As a dynamic and curious engineer, I'm always eager to share my knowledge, inspire others, and contribute to a future-ready railway.
