Global TV - service evolution

The evolution of TV is proceeding all around the world, from those countries making the transition to IP streaming delivery through to those still making the move from Analogue. One observation that is noted in many forums is the importance and impact that TV has had on society in both profoundly positive and sometimes negative ways. This panel will review and analyse the ongoing developments in TV services around the world and what the future brings.

Dr Amal Punchihewa

PhD, MEng, FIET, FEngNZ, CEng, SMIEEE

Dr Amal Punchihewa is a seasoned researcher, educator, and consultant in ICT, media, and broadcasting with nearly 40 years of experience. He holds a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from the University of Moratuwa, a Master’s in Electronics Engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, and a PhD from Massey University. Amal is a Chartered Professional Engineer, Fellow of IET (UK) and Engineering New Zealand, Senior Member of IEEE (USA), and Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE-Broadcast Technology Society.

He has worked in academia, research, and industry, including a pivotal role at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, where he led the introduction of NICAM stereo broadcasting and multilingual sound. Amal has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and authored three books. He was a recipient of the IESL Wimalsurendra Award for on-the-job Research. He advises on media convergence, evolving technologies, and strategic decision-making for ICT stakeholders. Currently, he volunteers as Chair of the Engineering New Zealand Manawatu Branch, STEM Ambassador, Mentor, and Deputy Chair of IET Wellington & South Island, and serves as a Technical Advisor for AIBD.
