Global TV - service evolution

The evolution of TV is proceeding all around the world, from those countries making the transition to IP streaming delivery through to those still making the move from Analogue. One observation that is noted in many forums is the importance and impact that TV has had on society in both profoundly positive and sometimes negative ways. This panel will review and analyse the ongoing developments in TV services around the world and what the future brings.

Dr Amal Punchihewa

PhD, MEng, FIET, FEngNZ, CEng, SMIEEE

Dr Amal Punchihewa is a seasoned researcher, educator, and consultant in ICT, media, and broadcasting with nearly 40 years of experience. He holds a degree in Electronics and Telecommunications from the University of Moratuwa, a Master’s in Electronics Engineering from the Technical University of Eindhoven, and a PhD from Massey University. Amal is a Chartered Professional Engineer, Fellow of IET (UK) and Engineering New Zealand, Senior Member of IEEE (USA), and Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE-Broadcast Technology Society.

He has worked in academia, research, and industry, including a pivotal role at Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation, where he led the introduction of NICAM stereo broadcasting and multilingual sound. Amal has published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and authored three books. He was a recipient of the IESL Wimalsurendra Award for on-the-job Research. He advises on media convergence, evolving technologies, and strategic decision-making for ICT stakeholders. Currently, he volunteers as Chair of the Engineering New Zealand Manawatu Branch, STEM Ambassador, Mentor, and Deputy Chair of IET Wellington & South Island, and serves as a Technical Advisor for AIBD.

Satriyo Dharmanto

Chief Technology Officer - TVRI – Indonesia

Mr. Bernardus Satriyo Dharmanto is a seasoned professional with a distinguished career in ICT, Broadcasting, and the Digital Economy.

With extensive experience in technical management, business development, and rural development, Satriyo has fostered strong relationships across Telcos, IT, and Broadcasting industries in Asia-Pacific, the UK, and Norway.

He has made significant contributions to national broadband initiatives, public-private partnerships, Digital TV Terrestrial Deployment, and rural-SME-community development. Satriyo Dharmanto has been invited several times as a keynote speaker in international conferences, such as ABU, AIBD and BroadcastAsia.

He is a Senior Member of IEEE, has served as the IEEE Communication Society Indonesia Chapter Chair, and the IEEE Indonesia Section Chair. Satriyo Dharmanto is also a prolific author, having published five books and numerous journal articles on ICT, broadcasting, and business strategy.

Currently, Satriyo Dharmanto is Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of TVRI – Indonesia.

Liming Fu

Senior Consultant - National Collaboration Dep. Of UWA

Liming currently functions as a Senior Consultant of the National Collaboration Dep. Of  UWA. Committee member of Outside Broadcast, CSMPTE, and Committee member of Photography & Cameraman specialist, CSMPTE.

He possesses more than 30 years of experience in the broadcast and media industry within many European and US-based international firms and associations, managed multi-cultural and multi-national teams, and also follows up technical trends.

Liming witnessed the evolution of media technical dynamic change during the past decades. From analogue to digital, from SD to HD, then to UHD, IP and 5G, cloud-based production and transmission till today. He has experience in supporting many big events, like the Asian Games, Olympic Games, and National sports and has also worked with systems from 4K and 8K and IP solutions.

Liming has written many articles and published books, managed and participated in many conferences, trade shows and road shows and workshops around the world, like NAB, IBC, InterBEE, BCA, KOBA, BI, and of course BIRTV and CCBN, as while as BES in India, SMPTE and ABE in Sydney, ABU DBS in KL, SMPTE HK,  CSMPTE’s annual conference and ITTC.

Dr.ir. E.M. (Egon) Verharen

Manager Innovation - NPO

Dr.ir. E.M. (Egon) Verharen is Manager Innovation at the NPO (Dutch national public service media organization) and oversees the innovation programme for the national public broadcasters.

The Innovation team stimulates and facilitates innovation projects on media production and distribution, investigating new technology, platforms, interaction, content formats and workflows. His expertise is in streaming and distribution, enterprise architecture, innovation management and deployment of new technologies.

Before joining NPO in 2006, he was Innovation Manager at SURFnet, the Dutch higher education and research network, and an assistant professor at Tilburg University. He received his MSc (computer science) at University of Twente and his PhD (intelligent agents) at Tilburg University. He served in international coordination committees, such as the European Broadcasting Union Technical Committee (2010-2018 of which chair from 2014-2018) and is a regular presenter at (inter)national conferences.

He sees himself as a gadget loving, video addicted, (acid)jazz listening family man with an interest in innovation management and the development of new digital products and services.
