Ground Penetrating Radar

About

Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) is a non-destructive testing technique used to evaluate the integrity of the ballast layer and subsurface structures of the railway track.

Daryll will be talking about the experience to-date using GPR in railway environments, particularly how it has been used to better understand track and ballast fatigue. He will also cover how GPR helps to see what’s happening below the surface, supports smarter maintenance decisions, and how it moves away from reactive fixes toward more predictive planning.

The lecture will also touch on where GPR might go in the future, using condition and ballast age data to guide not just when to intervene, but how to respond and rectify issues using the most suitable method.
