Guidelines on best practices for hardening control systems and associated networks

About

This presentation will explain why engineers should design cyber protection features into all the components of control networks, including the hardware, software and physical infrastructure that are used to control industrial plant, mines and utilities. The presentation will present the common themes in ISO Cyber security Standards and practical experience in hardening control networks.

This talk will benefit engineers who are involved with cyber security. Due to the complexity of IT networks and the potential for more stringent regulation these practices will assist in planning and implementing control networks.

The best practices that will be presented are based on practical experience and a number of features that are currently being included in ISO and Australian Standards Cyber Security Standards including interaction with AI features. Case Studies from an autonomous water control system, mine PLC control network, and advanced cyber attacks will be presented.

In addition to hardening networks these practices will also aid cyber experts to identify how and where a cyber attack has occurred.  Information obtained from a successful hack can also be used to protect other control networks from similar methods of cyber attack.
