About

This one-hour “Lunch and Learn” session will bring together experts from academia, industry, and research to share insights, discuss challenges, and explore future trends in AI and IoT.

Real-World Applications in Industry of AI and IoT

Artificial Intelligence (AI) and the Internet of Things (IoT) are revolutionizing industries by integrating advanced technologies to enhance operational efficiency and drive innovation. AI, with its capacity to learn from data and make informed decisions, and IoT, characterized by its network of interconnected devices that communicate and share information, together create a powerful synergy that is transforming various sectors.

In manufacturing, AI and IoT are employed to optimize processes and improve productivity through predictive maintenance and real-time monitoring. Smart factories utilize these technologies for automated quality control and efficient supply chain management, significantly reducing downtime and operational costs. The healthcare industry benefits from AI-driven diagnostic tools and IoT-enabled medical devices, which enhance patient care by facilitating real-time health monitoring, accurate treatment, and remote consultations, thereby improving accessibility and patient outcomes.

The power industry is also experiencing a profound transformation through the application of AI and IoT. These technologies enable advanced grid management, real-time monitoring, and predictive maintenance of power infrastructure. Smart grids, which use IoT sensors and AI algorithms, optimize energy distribution, enhance fault detection, and improve overall grid reliability. Additionally, AI-driven analytics contribute to energy management and efficiency by predicting demand patterns, integrating renewable energy sources, and optimizing energy consumption in real-time.

In the hospitality industry, AI and IoT are enhancing guest experiences and operational efficiency. IoT-enabled devices such as smart thermostats, lighting systems, and automated check-in/check-out processes improve convenience and personalization for guests. AI-driven chatbots and virtual assistants offer real-time support and recommendations, while data analytics provide insights into guest preferences and behavior, enabling tailored services and optimized resource management. These advancements help hotels and resorts increase guest satisfaction, streamline operations, and ultimately drive growth in a competitive market.

Speaker

Dr. Logeeshan Velmanickam is a distinguished researcher and senior lecturer at the University of Moratuwa, renowned for his pioneering work in integrating Artificial Intelligence (AI) with renewable energy and power systems. He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from North Dakota State University, USA, and earned his undergraduate degree with First Class Honors from the University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. Dr. Velmanickam's research focuses on leveraging AI to enhance the efficiency, reliability, and sustainability of energy systems. His work has led to significant advancements in fault classification and localization in microgrids, optimal microgrid scheduling, and non-intrusive load monitoring. Dr. Velmanickam has published extensively in high-impact journals and has received numerous awards for his contributions to AI research. His leadership extends beyond academia, as he actively collaborates with industry partners to implement innovative AI-driven solutions in real-world applications. With a commitment to advancing the field, Dr. Velmanickam continues to push the boundaries of AI research, driving innovations that promise to transform the energy sector and beyond.

Second Presentation

Neil's talk will examine growing demands and use cases in defence, government and maritime, in the context of current and emerging satellite communication and hybrid networks; looking at some of the potential applications of AI/ML and IoT and some of the challenges and demands, including operational and cultural, in delivering into these areas.

Speaker

Neil Fraser joined NSSLGlobal as Director Defence and Space Programmes in early 2020, following 6 years growing Viasat’s presence in the UK across the defence and space sectors.  Before joining industry in late 2013, he spent 26 years in the British Army leading organisations up to 600 strong.  During his military career he yspent 3 years leading a 60 strong team responsible for UK MOD global satellite and strategic radio communications projects and services; completed 3 tours in Afghanistan including the initial deployment to Kabul soon after 9-11 commanding 216 Parachute Signal Squadron, working in a US Task Force with government and civilian agencies, and then commanding 22 Signal Regiment providing communications across the country; he also served in Northern Ireland, the Balkans, as a Joint Operational Planner, and with Airborne and Commando forces. He has Masters degrees in the Design of Information Systems and Defence Studies.
