About

This one-hour, free-to-attend “Lunchtime discussion session” event, is an opportunity to discuss the challenges the engineering community may have in exploiting and integrating agile novel antenna concepts into reconfigurable radio systems and networks

The discussion question being posed is “How do we integrate new antenna concepts with agile radio systems and agile networks - or what should be included in an antenna control unit and why.”

The aim is to discuss the challenges and potentially consider a way forward for the community.

The frequency bands of interest range from VLF to free space optics and radio applications ranging from underwater radio systems to space-based systems.

The format is based on on-line discussion, using the Zoom Q&A function, following a short presentation and discussion between two technical leaders Anil Shukla and James Birchall who will set the scene and challenges.

Topics to be covered:

  • Antennas
  • Propagation
  • Dynamic Spectrum Access
  • Intelligent radios and antennas
  • Electromagnetics
  • Wireless applications
  • Interference mitigation
  • Spectrum resilience
  • Cyber electromagnetics
  • Spectrum management
  • Measurement techniques and strategies
  • Radio propagation environments
  • Spectrum occupancy and measurement techniques
  • Radio application concepts
  • Early-stage research
  • Simulations
  • Research plans

Speakers

Dr Anil Shukla

Senior Fellow - QinetiQ

Anil Shukla (FIET) is a QinetiQ Fellow and a Research and Innovation leader in radio systems, RF technologies, propagation and spectrum regulation. His expertise ranges from medium-wave systems to mm-waves systems and his current research interests include: “Operating Radio Systems in Difficult Environments“, “Physical Layer Security and Resilience,” and “Cognitive / Intelligent Radios.”

At QinetiQ, he manages a wide range of research activities related to communications and networks for systems operating from underwater to space.

He is a sub-editor of the IET Microwaves Antennas and Propagation Journal and the Chair of the IET Antennas and Propagation Technical Network.

Dr James Birchall

Leader - Electro-Technical

James Birchall holds a PhD in Communications Engineering from the University of Bristol and has many years’ experience consulting in this area.

James leads Electro-Technical which is an SME engineering consultancy specialising in the provision of novel RF engineering services using bespoke lab, office, and workshop facilities in Bristol, to enable rapid prototyping and evaluation of new RF concepts. His specialities include low TRL research projects involving communications and sensing systems. Prior to this, James spent several years at Rowden Technologies, working on Machine Learning systems for Signal Classification and Novel Sensing techniques.

Recent research interests include Antenna Applications and Applied Materials for Communications Systems and, Adaptive and Agile Antenna Systems.
