This technical talk will explore High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) technology as used in Converter Stations and many submarine cable systems.  Focus topics will include evolution of the converter technology, typical use cases, how it works and an overview of submarine cables.

Nathan Farrell-Jones CEng, MIET

Offshore Technical Manager - National Grid Strategic Infrastructure

Nathan has nearly two decades of experience in the Electricity Transmission Industry and spent most of his career to date as a Lead Advanced Commissioning Engineer in Operations.  Nathan is passionate about the use of innovative technology and amongst his proudest achievements were deployment of the World’s highest Voltage submarine cable system and the World’s first electronic Power Flow Controller.  Today, Nathan’s role involves running a specialised technical team who oversee the engineering of a portfolio of HVDC projects as part of the “Great Grid Upgrade”.
