IET France Local Network Annual General Meeting 2025
Including guest presentation from Sophie Cavé-Lopez on The Mechanics of Melody: Birdsong through an Engineering lens
About
The IET France Local Network invites you to its Annual General Meeting to go over the last year and elect a committee for the 2026 session. This will be an online event held on Teams. The session will be kicked off by a presentation from Sophie Cavé-Lopez on The Mechanics of Melody: Birdsong through an Engineering lens.
Birdsong provides a compelling case study in natural closed-loop control. As a model of vocal learning, songbirds use reinforcement learning to refine their songs through auditory feedback. The investigation of how songs are acquired, maintained, and modulated presents concrete technical challenges, from designing lightweight recording devices to analyzing complex acoustical and neural datasets. This talk introduces key engineering perspectives in birdsong research and examines how interdisciplinary collaboration can advance our understanding of natural learning processes while informing the development of artificial learning systems.
