Technical Talk: Digital Twins in Rail Systems Application

Presented by: Dr Jacek Mocki,  Founder | Consultant | Asset Management | Integration | Process MOTZKY Pty Ltd

Digital technology has been introduced to rail systems since the early 1990s. Initially, digitisation supported rail engineering by replacing hand-drawn designs with printed copies of artefacts. This significantly improved the design process and reduced the need for large office space. Further development of Computer-Aided Design (CAD) enabled attempts at design production automation, the creation of 3D models, and the association of drawings with attributes—facilitating information management through digital asset management systems. Although the technology exists, more needs to be done to standardise approaches and ensure it delivers long-term benefits, rather than leaving incomplete digital products at the end of project implementation.

The next challenge is advancing digital engineering through the development and application of digital twins to further improve rail safety.

This talk will focus on the application of digital twins. It will present a practical rail example—specifically, a rail turnout—to demonstrate how digitisation progresses and how digital twinning can enhance rail engineering, operations, and maintenance.

Dr Jacek Mocki

Founder | Consultant | Asset Management | Integration | Process MOTZKY Pty Ltd

Jacek Mocki is a qualified and highly experienced chartered transport engineer. He possesses extensive knowledge of transportation systems, a detailed understanding of asset and project lifecycles, strong principles of engineering products and services, and the ability to develop new processes and adapt existing ones. He has been actively involved in the development and delivery of major projects, as well as in the design and implementation, supported by solution-driven option analysis. Jacek has published several papers at international conferences and technical forums, and he co-authored a chapter in the Handbook on Digital Twin and Artificial Intelligence Techniques for Rail Applications (ISBN: 9781032776026). At MOTZKY, Jacek has also developed an innovative delivery methodology—ACS—which has been successfully applied to address customer requirements and in MOTZKY’s projects to achieve predictable outcomes. Using this methodology, he has implemented new technologies into rail and customer services within the transport industry. He currently leads MOTZKY Pty Ltd, addressing customer needs across three main categories: Asset Management | Integration | Process.
