Speakers

Dr Ljubo Vlacic

Professor Emeritus at Griffith University

Professor Emeritus Ljubo Vlacic is with Griffith University's Institute for Integrated & Intelligent Systems. From January 2024 he has assumed the appointment to the IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Society President. He is a control systems scientist and practitioner, renowned for his contributions to co-operative self-driving vehicles and intelligent control systems research and development. 

His research achievements made news headlines and were broadcast through media outlets throughout the world. 

In recognitions of his achievements, he received numerous awards. Currently, he is: (i) Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Southeast University, China (2021- 2027); (ii) Director on the Board of Directors of the ANZCC Steering Committee; (iii) General Chair of the 2025 Australian and New Zealand Control Conference; (iv) General Chair of the 2025 IEEE Intelligent Transportation Systems Conference; and (v) the Immediate Past Editor-in-Chief of IEEE-Intelligent Transportation Systems Magazine. 

He graduated from the University of Sarajevo (Control) and completed his MPhil and PhD studies in Control at the same university. He also graduated from the Conservatorium of Music, University of Sarajevo and played violin with philharmonic and symphony orchestras.

Technical Talk: Shall We Let AI Be in the Driver’s Seat?

Speaker: Dr Ljubo Vlacic

Abstract 

Although self-driving vehicles research has achieved its prominence, there are numerous issues that are yet to be addressed, in order for self-driving vehicles to bring a quality change to people's mobility and road safety. The talk is aimed at sharing with the audience the speaker's personal view on some of these issues.
