IET WA Kirby Prize Award Presentation: IET Introduction2: The Internet Avalanche and How AI Makes Decisions
About
The IET WA Local Network invites you to the Kirby Prize Award and Presentation event and the opportunity to network with the Engineering Community in WA!
The recipient of the Prestigious James N Kirby Prize, which is presented for outstanding eminence, distinction and public achievement, is WA’s own Dr Walter Green.
For his presentation Walter will be providing us with an ‘Introduction2’ the recently identified Internet Avalanche (IA) threat and the growing role of artificial intelligence in modern engineering and technology systems. Discovered in 2024, IA events have the potential to significantly degrade internet and network performance, creating new cybersecurity risks for organisations and critical infrastructure. The presentation will explain how Internet Avalanche events occur, why they present a serious operational challenge, and practical approaches to minimise their impact. The session will also explore how AI systems make decisions through interconnected neural networks, providing valuable insight into data selection, model implementation, testing and project optimisation. Attendees will gain a clearer understanding of both emerging cyber threats and the practical considerations involved in delivering effective AI projects.
We hope you can come along to congratulate Walter, learn about some new topics, and make some new contacts!
