About

Nick Deavin, MBE CEng CMgr FIET

Distinguished Engineer - AWE

Nick started his engineering career in the Royal Air Force as an aircraft craft apprentice, travelling the world and serving in several conflicts, on several aircraft types, before a final tour as the Defence Equipment & Support composite materials subject matter expert and MOD training & historic aircraft fleet structural integrity advisor.  On retiring from the RAF after 25 years, he was honoured to be awarded an MBE in the 2008 New Year Honours for development and implementation of the MOD aircraft fleet composite materials maintenance policy.

He subsequently joined AWE as a Project Engineering Manager and gained professional registration as both a Chartered Engineer with the IET and Chartered Manager status through CMI.  He then moved to a Lead Internal Regulator role and, after 4 years, left AWE to join the Amec Berkshire Nuclear Engineering Consultancy Business Unit (BU) lead team.   After navigating through several business acquisitions to becoming part of the Wood Oil & Gas corporation, he successfully transitioned the BU from reliance on a single large project to a diverse portfolio of services.

In Oct 2018, Nick was delighted to return to AWE as Maintenance Lead Technical Authority and subsequently establish the role of Senior Maintenance Authority, appointed by the Chief Engineer, to set the Asset Integrity Management (AIM) strategy and support maintenance development and delivery through-life across AWE sites.  It is this diverse career path, skillset and experience that enabled Nick to identify the need to better manage our ageing assets and lead a corporate improvement that has enhanced trust with our ONR and EA regulators and supported the downgrading of the corporate level regulatory issue.

Nick is proud to have had his achievements validated by the appointment to the Senior Leadership Team as a Distinguished Engineer supporting both across the business and externally through outreach with technical institutions and forums.
