27 Apr 2026 /
6:00pm - 8:00pm

About

The increasing penetration of Renewable Energy Sources (RES) is introducing new challenges related to power system stability, reliability, and operational security. This presentation will discuss key issues identified by system operators worldwide in networks with high levels of inverter-based resources (IBRs). In addition, examples from recent industry studies and operational experiences will be presented to illustrate how these solutions are being implemented in practice.

Speakers

Dr Andreas Nikolaou

Senior Power Systems Engineer at BlakeClough Consulting

Andreas Nikolaou is a Senior Power Systems Engineer at BlakeClough Consulting. He holds a Bachelor’s degree (BEng) in Electronic and Electrical Engineering and a Master’s degree (MSc) in Electrical Power Engineering from Northumbria University, Newcastle. He also obtained a PhD from Imperial College London, where he was a member of the Control and Power Research Group.

During his doctoral studies, his research focused on the modelling and analysis of power systems, with particular emphasis on ancillary services provided by renewable energy sources (such as battery energy storage systems, photovoltaic systems, and wind turbines). His work also addressed the operational challenges associated with the increasing penetration of renewable energy sources in power networks, as well as the types of faults and system disturbances that are expected to occur more frequently in future transmission networks.
