The Particle Accelerator Engineering Network is pleased to announce an upcoming event on the Functional Safety of Linear Accelerators.

Morning Talks
The day begins with presentations from four expert speakers, covering a range of topics including:

  • Cybersecurity challenges specific to linac systems
  • Functional safety considerations for cyclotrons
  • Emerging safety technologies and protocols critical to ensuring reliable linac operation

Afternoon Tour at Elekta
After lunch, attendees will enjoy an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of Elekta, a global leader in radiotherapy. Highlights include:

  • A walkthrough of Elekta’s factory, showcasing the step-by-step manufacturing of our radiotherapy machines
  • A visit to the Unity shelters, where you'll see the MR-Linac system, a unique machine that combines an MRI machine with radiation therapy.
  • A guided tour of our marketing suite to see the variety of products that we make.

This event promises to be an informative and engaging experience for all participants, fostering knowledge sharing and networking within the field of particle accelerator engineering.

Speakers

Laya Allen

Functional Safety Senior Engineer - Science and Technology Facilities Council (STFC)

Laya Allen has 16 years of experience in industrial automation which includes high voltage substation automation, oil & gas control systems engineering and functional safety engineering.

She has a Masters degree in Control Systems from Imperial College London and is a Chartered Engineer registered with the Engineering Council. She is also a certified FS Engineer (TÜV Rheinland).

She currently works as a Senior Engineer in the functional safety team at ISIS Neutron and Muon Source (STFC), Rutherford Appleton Laboratory.

Sash Persand

Lead Cyclotron engineer - Siemens Healthineers

Sash works as a Lead Cyclotron engineer at Siemens Healthineers, in London. In addition, he is the PETNET Solutions Ltd. (a Siemens Healthineers company) 'Radiation Lead' and RPS.

He is a seasoned engineer with over two decades of experience in particle accelerator engineering.

Sash is also IET member and has a keen interest in the promotion of engineering and technology for the wider community.

Charlotte Newman

Product Risk Manager - Vision RT

Charlotte Newman is a Product Risk Manager at Vision RT, where she leads a team focused on streamlining risk management to support safe and efficient product development.

With previous roles at Elekta and Philips, Charlotte has worked across the full product lifecycle, supporting safety, regulatory compliance, and quality assurance for a wide range of medical technologies; including linear accelerators, automated external defibrillators (AEDs), diagnostic equipment, radiotherapy collision mapping systems, and surface-guided radiation therapy (SGRT) devices.

She enjoys running in her spare time and is passionate about making risk processes practical and helping teams feel confident in delivering safe, effective products.
