Manchester Metrolink

Visit to Queens Road Depot

About

This is the Manchester Retired Members Group Event.

Keolis Amey Metrolink is a joint venture that manages and operates the tram system. They operate and maintain a fleet of 147 Bombardier M5000 trams, the first of which were introduced in 2009. The last of the original fleet of 32 Ansaldo Breda Trams, which entered service in 1992, were withdrawn from service in 2014.

Metrolink is the biggest light rail system in the country. It uses 2 depots, one at Old Trafford and the original depot at Queens Road. Although the old Trafford depot is bigger, major maintenance and overhaul procedures are carried out at Queens Road.

The nearest Metrolink Station is Queens Road, on the Bury Line. It’s a 400m walk to the assembly point at the Irish World Heritage Centre car park. Parking is available in the Irish World Heritage Centre, Irish Town Way, M8 0AE. (Park in the Metrolink visitor spaces located next to the perimeter fence adjacent to the Depot)

Important safety information

  • Safety footwear is mandatory in the depot, and you will not be allowed inside the depot without them.
  • Visitors are asked to bring their own safety footwear and an Orange Hi-Viz vest if they have one.  (The site does have a limited supply for use by visitors) .
  • We may also be asked to wear other PPE (e.g. bump caps); if so, these will be provided.
