Mini-Conference: “Application of modern technologies for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion”
Hosted by IET Coventry and Warwickshire
About
All are welcome
A series of presentations organised by the Equality, Diversity and Inclusion Council (EDI Council) of Coventry University's College of Engineering, Environment, and Science.
Presentation-1: “AI in Robotics: From Image Interpretation to Intelligent Action” - Delivered by Dr. Preetha Ramiah
The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into robotic systems is driving advancements in precision, adaptability, and data-driven decision-making across various domains. This presentation highlights the application of AI-powered algorithms in robotics, using surgical imaging as a case study to demonstrate real-world impact. Specifically, we explore how machine learning techniques are employed to process MRI data for identifying regions of interest (ROI)—a critical component in tasks requiring high spatial accuracy. The workflow involves a series of data processing and analysis steps, where AI algorithms interpret complex visual information to support precise decision-making in robotic systems. These techniques not only enhance surgical robotics but also reflect broader opportunities for AI-enhanced decision systems in complex, data-rich environments. By showcasing this application, the presentation underlines the potential of intelligent algorithms to improve robotic performance in both specialized and general-use contexts.
Presentation-2: “Enhancing Inclusive Learning in Higher Education through AI-Powered Assistive Technologies for Students with Specific Learning Difficulties” - Delivered by Dr. Chinomso Uzoechi
Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLDs) including dyslexia, dyspraxia, and ADHD often face substantial barriers to equitable participation in Higher Education. Traditional learning environments, which rely heavily on text-based resources and rigid assessments, frequently disadvantage neurodivergent learners. With the increasing integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in education, a transformative opportunity has emerged to reimagine inclusive pedagogy.
This presentation will explore how AI-powered assistive technologies are enhancing accessibility, engagement, and academic performance among students with SpLDs. Tools such as AI-driven text-to-speech readers, intelligent spelling and grammar correction, real-time transcription, and adaptive learning platforms are not merely compensatory, but they are empowering. Using case examples from UK institutions and empirical research, I will show and educate how these tools personalise learning, support executive functioning, and foster independence.
The session will also address key implementation considerations, including digital literacy, institutional support, and ethical concerns surrounding data privacy and algorithmic bias. Finally, it will highlight the importance of co-designing technologies with disabled students to ensure that interventions are not only technically robust but also pedagogically meaningful and socially just.
At the end of the presentation, attendees will understand how AI-based solutions when integrated thoughtfully can act as levellers in the academic experience, assisting to close the attainment gap and advance a more inclusive model of Higher Education.
Presentation-3: Equality, Diversity and Inclusion in STEAM - Delivered by Stephen Powley
The Robot Day event series is a growing, volunteer-led celebration of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths (STEAM). We inspire people of all generations with a host of interactive activities, workshops, demonstrations, presentations and performances. Visitors to a typical event have the chance to build their own robot, get hands-on with coding, hear from inspirational experts about how robots improve people’s lives and experience virtual reality. There are also artistic performances and exhibits that explore the themes of robotics, automation and artificial intelligence through creative works such as craft and dance workshops, a range of static and moving exhibits. EDI is at the heart of the Robot Day mission, with our events and outreach centred on some of the UK’s most deprived communities. This presentation will show some of what we do at Robot Day and we have been successful in capturing imaginations to help changes lives for the better.
Presentation-4: Medical Telemetry for Fatigue Monitoring based on Bluetooth Technology - Delivered by Dr. Yuri A. Vershinin
One of four fatal traffic accidents are drowsiness related. The system for the fatigue monitoring and driver warning based on the Bluetooth technology is suggested in this paper. The advantage of the suggested Bluetooth based medical telemetry system, when compare with video camera-based systems, is that this telemetry system allows one to obtain the more reliable performance in different driving conditions. Additionally, the driver performance can be monitored remotely via the mobile-phone based data communication and the warning can be given to a driver in the case when the level of the driver tiredness is exceeded the predefined level.
