About

IET members are invited to visit NeRV (Net zero Research Village) this July, a unique research facility near Gateshead being led by Northern Gas Networks.

Taking a whole systems approach to data and domestic decarbonisation, NeRV is the UK’s first combined whole systems innovation research, development and demonstration facility, bringing together gas, electricity, communications and water.

It’s providing a space for collaborative innovative research and testing, in order to optimise low carbon, least cost decarbonisation solutions for UK households, while delivering the data policymakers need to inform complex economic and societal decisions regarding infrastructure.

Through nine homes specially constructed to represent 9.4 million UK dwellings built between 1900 to 1990, NeRV is a testbed for retrofit net zero technology, to understand the challenges involved at scale and in real time, while providing clarity on energy solutions best suited to different types of home.
