Professional networking - volunteer service
Organized by IVE Tsing Yi IET Student Network of Younger Members Section of the IET Hong Kong
About
This professional networking - volunteer service activity is designed to provide engineering students with an opportunity to apply their technical awareness and practical skills in support of members of the community with mobility needs. Under the guidance of practising engineers and mentors, participants will visit service users and families in small groups to understand their daily living environment and provide appropriate home-support assistance.
During the activity, students will observe and learn about basic household electrical-appliance installation, equipment placement, home safety checks and practical planning considerations. Subject to the guidance of the responsible engineers and mentors, participants may assist with simple installation, organisation and household-support tasks. The activity will emphasise safety, respect for service users, and appropriate teamwork throughout the visit.
Through this service-learning experience, students will gain a better understanding of how engineering knowledge can be applied to improve daily life. The experience will also help participants apply the practical knowledge, safety awareness and problem-solving skills gained from the activity to their future lessons, laboratory work and engineering projects. The activity promotes social responsibility, communication, teamwork and empathy, while encouraging participants to contribute their time and skills to support people in need within the community.
