Ring! Ring! The Story of the Telephone

About

The IET Hereford and Worcester Network’s Christmas Event this year is all about the story of the telephone.  Who DID invent it?  How did it develop? Did they think it would catch on?  And how does it work?

Come and hear the story of the humble device that started life as the unloved apparatus in the cold draughty hallway and ended as the smart device that practically everyone has got in their pocket!

Along the way, find out how the telephone revolutionised communications, spurned numerous spin-offs, and became part of our television, movie and pop music culture!  Take part in the quizzes to test your knowledge of the phone and its impact.  Discover the diverse range of people, materials and technology that the telephone embraces, and take a peek at where it might go next.

This is a free to attend event that takes place in the Lewis Lecture Theatre of Malvern College on Monday 7th December at 7.30 pm.  Afterwards join us for festive food and drinks and a chat about what you’ve heard.

Chartered Engineer

Richard Baker is a retired chartered engineer with a career in Design Engineering, most recently in the Rail Vehicle industry.  He grew up in the 1960s watching classic TV series such as Thunderbirds, Star Trek, Lost in Space, Doctor Who, among many others.  He has always been fascinated by the way the future was depicted in these series, and how the world we live in today sometimes very closely mirrors some of those depictions, and in other ways is completely different.
