Sellafield past, present and future: The science and technology of dealing with the country's nuclear risks and hazards
About
In 1947, the Sellafield site opened with a mission to produce the radioactive material for Britain's nuclear deterrent. As time passed, pioneers went on to design and build the world's first commercial-sized atomic power station and led the development of the technology for recycling nuclear fuel so that both plutonium and uranium could be recovered, stored and reused safely. Still, the Sellafield site presents one of Europe's most significant environmental remediation challenges today.
