Shoreline Management Plan and Havre des Pas Coastal Flood Alleviation Scheme
About
Between June 2018 and January 2020 the Government of Jersey produced and published the Shoreline Management Plan (SMP) for Jersey. (www.gov.je/smpreport) The plan aims to ensure that our coastal defences continue to protect the island over the next 100 years, with defence upgrades planned across three epochs. These are:
Epoch 1 – 2020 to 2040
Epoch 2 – 2040 to 2070
Epoch 3 – 2070 to 2120
Within Epoch 1 there will be eight projects undertaken to improve coastal defences and build resilience to coastal flooding, with the Havre des Pas coastal area being the highest priority area for scheme delivery (www.gov.je/shorelineplan).
The Havre des Pas Coastal Flood Alleviation Scheme covers the area from La Collette to La Grande Charriere Slipway encompassing the Havre des Pas and Greve d’Azette coastal areas. This is an ambitious £100m scheme that will deliver not only coastal protection for the area but will seek to improve public realm and regeneration of this much loved coastal area.
Steve Fitzgibbon is the Lead Engineer for Coastal Engineering at the Government of Jersey, within the Infrastructure & Environment Department and will be presenting the background to the Shoreline Management Plan and specifically the Havre des Pas Coastal Scheme. The talk will explore the complexities of both the Scheme and the ambitions for the project to support coastal flood protection and many other Government strategic objectives.
Jon Short, BSc, MSc, CWEM, is a Technical Director at AECOM. Jon has 17 years experience in coastal management and has led technically or managed a wide range of projects both in the UK and abroad. He heads up the coastal team in AECOM who comprise modellers, scientists and engineers. He and his team has been working on Jersey for several years both for the Government, Ports of Jersey and other clients. Jon was actively involved with the delivery of the Jersey Shoreline Management Plan and he is now managing the AECOM team supporting the Government in delivery of the coastal schemes to implement the policies set out in the Shoreline Management Plan.
