Simplify and add lightness: when tractors feel the need for speed

Worlds Fastest Tractor

About

In 2018 the JCB company embarked on a project to set a definitive Guinness World Record for the speed of a tractor over a flying 1 kilometre distance.

This was to be achieved by employing a mix of in-house parts, used on standard machines, and more specialised components sourced externally.

The record was set in 2019 and is a tribute to a synthesis of great British engineering skills and dedicated teamwork, with a group of (mainly) young engineers drawn from several JCB divisions.

A local contractor, Sid Jones of Logic/Magic was pleased to assist with the creation of appropriate firmware for the clutch ECU and this presentation reflects on his efforts and the project overall.

Contents include details of clutch operation, design and implementation of the clutch firmware, videos of component stress testing and of course, tractors at serious speed...
