Sizing particles using a laser

What is a particle and why is the size important? We are interested here in particles in the size range 0.01µm to over 1cm and with lasers projecting red or violet light. Using the principles of light diffraction and advanced silicon photodiode arrays we can measure the size of many thousands of particles simultaneously.

The talk will cover how the solid particles, or liquid droplets, are suspended and presented to the laser beam and how the signals from the photodiode array are processed. Lastly we will see how the size of the particles are calculated. There is some mathematics but it should be no problem to understand the principles.

Nigel Lightfoot, PhD, MinstP

Retired scientist

Nigel Lightfoot, PhD, MinstP is a retired scientist who worked for over 30 years at Malvern Instruments Ltd. (now Malvern Panalytical) He was involved in the development of particle size instruments, primarily the Mastersizer, Spraytec and Insitec ranges. Before this he was employed at the UK Atomic Energy Authority laboratory, Harwell, working on a similar particle size technology, Phase-Doppler, measuring the dynamic velocity and size of fuel droplets in furnaces and internal combustion engines.
