About

This talk will provide an end-to-end overview of high-frequency (HF) skywave Over-the-Horizon Radar (OTHR) systems, covering system architecture, HF antenna design, ray tracing and OTHR modelling, and the coordinate registration problem. Examples will draw on experience and data from field trials including the design and development of HF antennas from the prototype to production stage. The talk will conclude by covering the deployment of a research grade OTHR system by the Space Environment and Radio Engineering (SERENE) group as a UK technology demonstrator.

Joshua Ruck

Research Fellow and PhD Student in the Space Environment and Radio Engineering (SERENE) - University of Birmingham

Joshua Ruck is a Research Fellow and PhD Student in the Space Environment and Radio Engineering (SERENE) group at the University of Birmingham.

His research focusses on High-Frequency skywave Over-the-Horizon Radar (OTHR), spanning modelling through to engineering systems. He is leading the engineering deployment of a multi-static OTHR demonstrator currently under construction.

His PhD research is centred on the development of a coordinate registration and tracking system for the demonstrator radar, including the implementation of an inversion-based algorithm for simultaneous multi-static target localisation.
