Fusion is the process that powers the stars and we aim to harness that process to generate electricity and other forms of energy for various industrial processes. 

This webinar will introduce fusion energy generation, together with the challenges and opportunities associated with this area of technology as well as the plans for the UKAEA’s first of a kind fusion power plant - Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production (STEP). 

The speakers will also discuss the general characterisation of STEP’s control system and how that compares to the control systems for fission power plant and other relevant engineering industries.

Adam Stephen

Head of Advanced Controls Unit - UKAEA

Dr Adam Stephen is the head of the advanced controls unit at UKAEA. He is a real-time embedded software expert and former theoretical physicist committed to making Fusion Energy a reality. 

His mission is to apply of state-of-the-art electronics and embedded systems technologies to the problem of delivering and maintaining effective, reliable and resilient fusion energy power plant control and protection systems. 

His vision is to engage industry to develop this as a new supply chain capability, “fusionics” : fusionics is to fusion as avionics is to aerospace. 

Terry Thompson

Control System Lead, STEP - UKAEA

Terry Thompson is the control system lead for STEP, the UKAEA's spherical tokamak for energy production, leading the development of the control system technologies needed for delivering commercially viable fusion power to the UK grid by 2040. 

Terry was previously a Software Assurance Project Manager for Hitachi's Wylfa ABWR project and a lead control and instrumentation engineer for EDF Energy.
