Stopping the Dominoes - Preventing large-scale power grid failure [Also viewable online]

About

The GB electricity grid is an amazingly reliable system. Power cuts rarely impact wide areas. There has never been a UK system-wide outage since the formation of the National Grid 90 years ago.   However on April 28, 2025, a blackout impacted all of Spain, Portugal, and parts of southwest France, leaving over 50 million people without power.

This lecture will explain why preventing the domino effect of a cascading fault is critical to grid resilience.  It will highlight emerging threats to reliability as we transition to a renewable generation dominated system.
